August Wi-Fi Smart Lock Gen 4 (US): what it works with
August · model Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th gen) · For the US and Canada
- Matter Unconfirmed
- Apple Home Yes
- Google Home Yes
- Amazon Alexa Yes
- SmartThings Unconfirmed
- Home Assistant Yes
The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th gen) fits over the inside of your existing deadbolt, so your outside hardware and keys stay, and it has Wi-Fi built in with no bridge. Apple Home works over Bluetooth, Google Home and Alexa need the lock on Wi-Fi, and Home Assistant's August integration lists it. No Matter support is confirmed and SmartThings status is unclear. Two CR123A cells last about 3 months with typical Wi-Fi use.

Ecosystem compatibility
| Platform | Works? | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Matter | Unconfirmed | No official Matter statement found. A Best Buy Canada spec sheet lists Matter as unsupported, but retailer data is not enough to mark it 'no'. |
| Apple Home | Yes | HomeKit over Bluetooth. Controlling it away from home needs an Apple home hub (Apple TV, HomePod or iPad). No Home Key mentioned.[1],[2] |
| Google Home | Yes | Google Assistant integration needs the lock on Wi-Fi.[1],[3] |
| Amazon Alexa | Yes | Needs Wi-Fi. Voice unlock requires setting a PIN.[1],[3] |
| SmartThings | Unconfirmed | August's Wi-Fi Smart Lock FAQ and its older integrations pages list Samsung SmartThings (cloud integration, no Z-Wave), but the current product page does not, and no SmartThings page confirms the integration is still offered. |
| Home Assistant | Yes | The August integration lists the Wi-Fi Smart Lock (Gen 4) as working with no Connect Bridge. Gen 4 battery readings are often wrong in Home Assistant.[5] |
“Via Matter” means you add it with that platform's Matter controller instead of a brand skill or app. “Unconfirmed” means we couldn't find an official source either way. How we verify.
Specs that matter for setup
- Radio: Built-in Wi-Fi for remote and voice control; Bluetooth for local operation and for talking to HomeKit.
- Hub: Wi-Fi is built in; August says no bridge is needed. Remote HomeKit use still needs an Apple home hub.
- Local control: Bluetooth control from the app is local, but no source confirms local control through any smart home platform.
- Fit: Mounts over the interior side of your existing deadbolt, so your outside hardware and keys stay.
- Keypad: No keypad on the lock; Yale/August sell keypad versions as separate products.
- Power: August's FAQ says two 3V CR123 or CR123A lithium (non-rechargeable) cells, with up to 3 months of life under typical Wi-Fi use. The 4 × AA seen on some listings belongs to older August locks.
