| Platform | Works? | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Matter | Unconfirmed | Neither the ecobee product page nor the launch release mentions Matter. Absence is not a statement that it lacks it. |
| Apple Home | Yes | ecobee lists Apple HomeKit under Works with. HomeKit is a direct pairing, separate from Matter.[1],[2] |
| Google Home | Yes | ecobee lists Google Assistant under Works with.[1],[2] |
| Amazon Alexa | Yes | ecobee lists Amazon Alexa under Works with.[1],[2] |
| SmartThings | Unconfirmed | Neither the Essential page nor the launch release lists SmartThings, and no Matter claim exists; not confirmed either way. |
| Home Assistant | Unconfirmed | Home Assistant's ecobee integration (cloud polling) covers "ecobee thermostats" in general and does not name the Essential; no source confirms this model, so it is not confirmed either way. Its HomeKit support may offer another route, also unconfirmed for this model. |
“Via Matter” means you add it with that platform's Matter controller instead of a brand skill or app. “Unconfirmed” means we couldn't find an official source either way. How we verify.
Specs that matter for setup
- Radio: ecobee's page lists Wi-Fi 6 at 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth LE 5.4 and a sub-GHz radio (the sub-GHz radio is not one of our radio values).
- Hub: Connects to your router over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; no bridge needed.
- Local control: No maker source states what works without internet. Home Assistant's ecobee integration uses ecobee's cloud.
- Type: Wall-mounted thermostat with a 2.8-inch touchscreen.
- Controls: The Essential page lists gas, oil, electric and forced-air systems, conventional 2H/1C and 1H/2C, and heat pumps in a 2H/1C setup. ecobee's support article says its thermostats work with most 24 V residential systems and not with high-voltage or millivolt systems.
- Power: Powered through the C and R terminals. Without a C-wire you need the Power Extender Kit, which ecobee says is not included with the Essential and sells separately.
Before you buy
- The Power Extender Kit for homes without a C-wire is not in the box and costs extra.
- ecobee doesn't list Matter, SmartThings or Home Assistant for the Essential.
- Not for high-voltage or millivolt systems.
