- Matter Yes, over Wi-Fi
- Apple Home Via Matter
- Google Home Via Matter
- Amazon Alexa Via Matter
- SmartThings Via Matter
- Home Assistant Yes
The Tapo S505D is a Wi-Fi single-pole dimmer switch for US wall boxes. It needs a neutral wire, handles 150 W of dimmable LED or 300 W of incandescent and halogen, and works on 2.4 GHz only. TP-Link calls it Matter-certified, so Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings add it through their Matter controllers with no Tapo hub. Home Assistant's TP-Link integration lists it too.

|---|---|---|
| Matter | Yes, over Wi-Fi | TP-Link's US page and datasheet call it Matter-certified. We found no CSA listing that names the S505D (CSA's TP-Link "Smart Wi-Fi Dimmer Switch" listing gives no model number), so this rests on TP-Link's statement.[1],[2] Other Matter smart switches |
| Apple Home | Via Matter | TP-Link's spec table lists Apple Home, and its setup steps name the Apple Home app as a Matter app.[1] |
| Google Home | Via Matter | TP-Link's spec table lists Google Assistant, and its setup steps name the Google Home app as a Matter app.[1] |
| Amazon Alexa | Via Matter | TP-Link's spec table lists Alexa, and its setup steps name the Alexa app as a Matter app. Matter setup needs an Echo that works as a Matter controller.[1] |
| SmartThings | Via Matter | TP-Link's spec table lists Samsung SmartThings as a Matter platform.[1] |
| Home Assistant | Yes | Home Assistant's TP-Link Smart Home integration lists the S505D among supported Tapo wall switches. As a Matter device it can also be added through the Matter integration.[3] |
“Via Matter” means you add it with that platform's Matter controller instead of a brand skill or app. “Unconfirmed” means we couldn't find an official source either way. How we verify.
Specs that matter for setup
- Radio: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only (802.11b/g/n); Bluetooth 4.2 is used only for setup.
- Hub: No hub for basic use. A Tapo Hub is needed only for Tapo sensors and Smart Buttons, sold separately.
- Local control: TP-Link says it stays reachable on the local network through the Tapo app or another Matter controller when the internet is down.
- Form: Replaces a single-pole wall dimmer switch; indoor use only.
- Dimmer: TRIAC phase-cut (leading edge): 150 W LED, 300 W incandescent/halogen.
- Needs neutral wire: The datasheet lists a neutral wire in the wall box as a requirement. The product page only shows a neutral connection in its wiring steps.
- Gangs / channels: TP-Link gives no gang count; the datasheet asks for a standard lighting wall box at least 2 inches deep and the pack includes two wall plates.
Before you buy
- Needs a neutral wire in the wall box, and it replaces a single-pole switch only.
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only.
- Dimming is TRIAC phase-cut (leading edge), so use TRIAC-dimmable LEDs.
- The Matter claim rests on TP-Link's statement; we found no CSA listing naming the S505D.
